A La Puente one-day itinerary can pair the Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum with a quieter break at Arceo Park. The museum is in the neighboring City of Industry, not La Puente; the La Puente area guide gives a broader sense of the local setting.

  • Morning: Check the museum’s public-tour schedule before planning around a visit.
  • Midday: Tour the historic homestead, allowing time to see its separate buildings and grounds.
  • Later: Head to Arceo Park for a change of pace.

The Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum brings together buildings and grounds shaped by several generations of local history.

William and Nicolasa Workman and their children left Taos in fall 1841 and traveled the Old Spanish Trail to the greater Los Angeles area. The Workman family later developed a cattle and farm operation on Rancho La Puente over more than 35 years.

Walter P. Temple bought the property in 1917 and renovated the ranch, including Workman House and El Campo Santo Cemetery. The City of Industry acquired and restored part of the site, and the Homestead Museum opened in 1981.

The museum is a certified site on the Old Spanish National Historic Trail; Workman House and El Campo Santo have California historic landmark status, while La Casa Nueva is on the National Register.

Free public home tours run Friday through Sunday, except for the fourth weekend of the month, with tour times from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tours are limited in size and first come, first served; groups of 10 or more need reservations.

El Campo Santo can be visited seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more on the buildings and visitor arrangements, read this Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum visitor guide.

Arceo Park gives the itinerary an outdoor pause after the historic site. You can keep the visit simple by leaving open time to walk around the park. The Arceo Park visitor guide offers more detail for planning this stop.
